Unique 360° wave-creating technology

As the only wave technology that generates 360° of waves, currently unmatched in both wave size and productivity, Surf Lakes utilises several key elements to produce ocean-like waves for all ability levels simultaneously.

key elements

360° Wave generation

360° Wave generation

The Central Wave Device (CWD) or ‘plunger’ displaces water to create concentric swell lines. Surf Lakes uses compressed air to lift the CWD, and gravity brings it back down. Water buoyancy creates a trampoline effect, ‘catching’ the machine and assisting the next pulse.

This process takes about six seconds and is repeated multiple times to create a ‘set’ of waves. After each set finishes, water settles around the lake, and the compressed air recharges for the next set.

reef design (bathymetry)

reef design (bathymetry)

Using state-of-the-art Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling, the floor of each Surf Lake (bathymetry) is contoured to shape swell lines into surfable waves.

The lake is divided into four quadrants, separated by ‘return channels’. These channels allow surfers to paddle back safely, and to help water settle. Each quadrant’s bathymetry is custom designed to create different waves that suit various skill levels.

simultaneous variety

simultaneous variety

The Central Wave Device (CWD) creates pulses of swell that radiate out in concentric circles around the lake. These swell lines hit the reefs around the lake in a simultaneous fashion, allowing 5 ability levels to ride each swell. This maximises variety and throughput with over 200 surfers able to ride 10 waves per hour.

The production of 2000 rides per hour is unrivalled in the industry.

GRAVITY WAVES

GRAVITY WAVES

Surf Lakes’ displacement technology generates Gravity Waves with an orbital particle motion (like waves found in nature). This offers an authentic advantage in comparison to other wave generation techniques. The result is an ‘ocean-like experience’ driven by powerful waves that draw water off the bottom (creating a trough) and hold consistent shape along the reef.

water treatment

water treatment

Lake water is treated to meet the requirements of local regulatory authorities. Mixing from the wave action ensures the reticulation system is economical. Treatment consists of:
– Filtration
– Primary Disinfection (Chlorine)
– Secondary Disinfection (UV/Ozone/AOP/Other)
– Reticulation

Power source

Power source

Each Surf Lake will be designed to operate on 100% electricity, opening a range of options for sustainably sourced energy.

WAVES FOR ALL ABILITIES

From beginner to pro, there’s a break for all skill levels at Surf Lakes

1 BEGINNER

The Beginners area is the white-water area that rolls through the inside of the reefs. Beginners can learn to paddle, catch waves and stand up.

2 INTERMEDIATE

The Intermediate wave is a rolling beach break – a gentle wave that’s easy to catch, ride and learn to do turns. This wave is also suitable for longboarders.

3 ADVANCED

The Advanced wave is a slightly larger wave, with a steeper take-off and more critical sections for advanced turns as well as aerial manoeuvres.

4 EXPERT

The Expert break has a five second barrel, followed by a section for advanced turns. The size, speed and power of this break is suitable for competitions and events.

5 PRO

The Pro break is a heavy slab, suitable for high level surfers and bodyboarders. It features a steep, difficult take-off with a fast, heavy barrel.
